It's so much fun to take a break from photographing little kids sometimes and instead photograph seniors.  This beautiful young woman was a joy to meet, as was her mother.  One of my most favorite parts of my job is getting to know new people.  Bridget reminded me a little of my oldest daughter with her passion for writng and love of books..  She was so sweet to my younger daughter, Kayla, who accompanied me on the shoot as my "assistant."

One of the great things about photographing seniors is that they will stand in whatever beautiful light that I want them to stand in....which is not always the case for toddlers.  And Thompson Station Park was really showing off some gorgeous light last night.  The autumn color isn't really there yet, thought I think it's coming soon (I hope). But the weather could not have been more perfect for Bridget's senior portrait session.

I keep hitting the jackpot with these senior girls who are just naturals in front of the camera.  Also, I loved her clothing choices. I am often asked if it is OK to change clothes during a photo session.  My answer depends a little on the type of session and ages of the subjects.  For senior or couples portrait sessions, you may absolutely bring a few different outfits.  For family sessions, I don't normally recommend it just because having to change clothes can sometimes upset little ones and disrupt the momentum of our session. Ultimately, I leave it up to parents but just caution you to consider the value of wardrobe changes verses timing and keeping little ones happy during a session.  But for teens and adults, there is plenty of time during a session for a few wardrobe changes, and it adds some variety in a senior session gallery.

The Schafran Family http://www.crystalfreemonphotography.com/blog/2017/10/the-schafran-family Last night was actually the first time I had met Brandilee and & Dan, but I've known their oldest son, Gavin, for several years from my daughter's school.   I'm at school quite a bit volunteering with the PTO and have gotten to know Gavin through my time there and he is such a sweet boy.  My first experience with the rest of Gavin's family was this past May at the Special Olympics.  Gavin has Cerebral Palsey and was competing in one of the races.  I had been asked to photograph the event as a whole, but was of course drawn to events where our own Cheetah's were competing, so I was focused on Gavin's race.  As he started getting closer to the finish line, Gavin started having a little trouble when his two little brothers came in to give him a hand.  It was the sweetest moment, and the three of them just won my heart right then and there.

Special Olympics at Summit High School Special Olympics at Summit High School

It wasn't until after the race that I learned that Gavin's two year old little brother Finn was battling a rare form of bladder cancer.  I have followed their story since then through posts from mutual friends and through their blog.  You can read more about their journey on their blog, "Finn's Fans".

In the past, I had photographed a few other families dealing with childhood cancer, and it was good to feel like I could do something for them, no matter how small.  (If you remember those sessions, you may want to know that little Arya is doing great and Katelyn is about to finish up her last chemo treatment!)  So I was really excited about the opportunity to finally meet Gavin's little brothers and his sweet parents.

Finn recently had surgery to remove his bladder and the surgery was a great success, but his fight is not over.  He will be starting chemo again soon to fight any remaining cancer cells that might still be there. I am glad we were able to fit in a session before chemo started for him again.

It was a perfect evening for a session and it's finally starting to feel like Autumn. We played with the leaves and the boys were particularly fond of gathering sticks. Four year old Everett even made a really cool fire pit with his sticks.  I think he's probably on his way to a position in the boy scouts.  My favorite moment was when I asked the three boys to race towards me for a photo, and when we said go, Finn took off in the opposite direction.  Gavin thought it was pretty funny too.

The courage & faith with which this family fights their battle has been very inspiring to me, and to many others who have been praying for them. Please keep praying for Finn and his family as they continue on this journey.

Tyler's Senior Portrait Session http://www.crystalfreemonphotography.com/blog/2017/10/tylers-senior-portrait-session "And now go, and make interesting mistakes, make amazing mistakes, make glorious and fantastic mistakes. Break rules. Leave the world more interesting for your being here." - NEIL GAIMAN

Tyler's Senior Portait Session was my third of the weekend and we weren't sure until the very last minute as to whether or not we were going to be able to do it because of the rain.  But thankfully, the showers finally started to clear just in time for our session in downtown Franklin.  This was just after my romantic rain session with Mikal & Shannon, so everything was still wet. But Tyler was a good sport about sitting on wet benches and steps for me.

The really cool thing about shooting on such a rainy, yucky day is that downtown Franklin had very few people in it. I typically only shoot there on Sundays, when a lot of the businesses are closed, but there is still usually a lot of people hanging out.  That is one reason (besides dangerous traffic) that I don't recommend this location for young children.  Sometimes it takes a bit of patience to wait for people to walk by before I can take a shot.  But for this session, I was actually able to get a shot of Tyler by the Franklin Theater without very many people around, as well as a shot of him standing at the head of downtown with no cars coming down the street. So don't let anyone tell you that there aren't benefits to doing a photo shoot on a dreary, rainy day.

Mikal & Shannon's Couples Session - Strolling in the Rain http://www.crystalfreemonphotography.com/blog/2017/10/mikal-shannons-couples-session-strolling-in-the-rain “I love the rain. I love how it softens the outlines of things. The world becomes softly blurred, and I feel like I melt right into it.”
― Hagumi Hanamoto

This time last year, Mikal was on a six month deployment in the military.  This year, Shannon saw my work on Instagram and decided that she wanted to have a couples portrait session for the two of them to celebrate their time together. The couple has been married for about a year, but have been sweethearts since middle school.  <3  They are such a sweet couple and I really enjoyed getting to know them during our session.

I was afraid that I was going to have to reschedule three different portrait sessions for this weekend, and I am really relieved that I did not have to reschedule any of them.  I was so excited when Shannon emailed me to say that they were game to continue with the session, rain or shine.  When poor weather happens on a scheduled session day, I always leave it up to my clients as to what they want to do.  Most choose to reschedule, which is perfectly acceptable, but shooting in the rain is a great option to consider if it works for you!  I think it was particularly perfect for a couples session.  I have a clear umbrella that works great and lets the light still fall on the subjects. Downtown Franklin was the perfect spot for a romantic stroll through the rain.  The drizzles came and went and we were still able to get plenty of shots without the umbrella.

What about you? Would you ever consider a portrait session in the rain?

Mikeya & Dominick's Engagement Portrait Session http://www.crystalfreemonphotography.com/blog/2017/10/mikeya-dominicks-engagement-portrait-session "If he... makes you laugh, kisses your forehead, says he's sorry, makes an effort, holds your hand, works hard, attempts to understand you... then, believe it or not, he's quite perfect."

Couples like Mikeya & Dominick make me really want to photograph more couples sessions.  I just love the chemistry between the two of them.  They wanted a portrait session to celebrate their recent engagement. Dominick proposed in front of family and friends at a dinner that she THOUGHT was to celebrate his birthday.  And of course she said yes. The way he makes her smile and laugh, and the way he looks at her, you just know they were meant to be.

I had a fantastic time hanging out with them at Thompson Station Park. I thought we might have to cancel because of the weather, but we were able to finish between moments of light rain.  They made it easy to capture the connection between the two of them and were so fun to photograph.  I am certain they will have a gorgeous wedding day and a long and happy marriage.

Why I love photographing children http://www.crystalfreemonphotography.com/blog/2017/10/why-i-love-photographing-children "There are no seven wonders of the world in the eyes of a child, there are seven million." - Walk Streightiff

I met Hayes & Ann & their parents at the James K Polk home for our photo session.  As I always do, especially when a location is new to me, I arrived early to look around and assess the light.  I fell in love with the spot right away. I love all the variations of brick, the stone paths & the beautiful little garden.

When I scope out a new location, I notice things that I might not see in "regular life".  I watched a squirrel for a little while and he watched me.  I noticed this beautiful tree with a strange looking fruit in it that I didn't recognize. I noticed a little area with some steps and a pretty wrought iron gate.  I observed the way the light flowed through the trees. Normally, if I were walking through an area, I might be distracted by thinking about all the things I needed to get done that day, or about where I was headed, without paying much attention to where I am right at this moment.  But when I'm scouting a location, and when I am photographing, well, anything really, I truly SEE the world around me. I think that is maybe what made me fall in love with photography.  It helps me to slow down and notice the beautiful things that are all around me.

I imagine that must be what it's like for little kids all the time.  They are constantly fascinated by every little thing they see. This is what I love about them, and I don't want to stifle that wonder at my sessions.  My new friend Hayes is a prime example of that curiosity.  Several times last night during our session, he would look at me and say "Let's go explore!"  Yes, Hayes. Let's do that.  Let's play with the rocks and bang sticks against the wall.  Let's run and jump and explore and find something new we haven't seen before.  Being able to capture that wonder and excitement about life is what inspires me.

What about you?  What helps you to slow down and live in the moment?

What to do when you are too late for Fall Family Photos http://www.crystalfreemonphotography.com/blog/2017/10/what-to-do-when-you-are-too-late-for-fall-family-photos Guys, it's officially October.  If you need me between now and December, I'll be either shooting or editing.  It's the editing that takes the most time, so if you really need to find me, your best bet is that I'll be in front of my laptop.  They say October is for Photographers as April is for Accountants.  This is so true.

As much as I would love to photograph more families this year, there are only so many hours in the day.  Especially in November...man the days are short in November.  Anyway, I'm still getting emails or messages from several of you each day asking if you can schedule Fall portraits.  I'm sorry, but it's too late.  Some of these sessions I'm shooting now have been booked for months and months.

I do have some good news though because there are a few things you can do if you missed the opportunity for Fall family portraits.

First, be sure you follow me on social media.  Last year I had one last minute cancellation from a client who had a sick child.  I posted that opening on Facebook and someone snagged that last minute spot and it turned out to be one of my favorite family portrait sessions of the season. So you never know if that is going to happen again, but be sure you are following my Facebook page and Instagram page to see opportunities.

Second, if you need a photo for your family Christmas card, join me at the Chapman's Retreat Elementary PTO Breakfast with Santa.  This will be the third year that I'm photographing this event and it's a lot of fun.  For an EXTREMELY low price, you get pancakes and a photo with Santa.  The full size digital images from the event will be on my website within about a week, and then you may use the image for your holiday card.

Third, and most importantly, stop procrastinating and book your family photos for 2018.  Right now, I am booking sessions from January until June.  All are excellent choices for photos.  Book yours today so you don't worry about being too late next time.

Now can we just talk about this adorable family for a moment?  These guys go to my church and I have had the honor of photographing them at VBS and other church events. It was so much fun to get to work with them at a "real" session. Both Colton (9) and Jace (5) did such a great job.  I love the ones of the boys racing each other...the way Jace looks over at his big brother with such a big smile on his face makes me happy.

Congrats on surviving your first year of parenthood http://www.crystalfreemonphotography.com/blog/2017/9/congrats-on-surviving-your-first-year-of-parenthood

Whenever I photograph a baby's one year old photo session, I can't help but think of it in terms of a celebration for the parents in honor of all they've achieved in the past year. I guess that's true for every birthday, but especially that first one.

I cannot think of a single year in my life where I changed more than the year Megan was born. I remember leaving the hospital that day and feeling like a complete fraud.  Who the hell decided I was capable of raising a human?  Especially the most beautiful, amazing, human I’d ever seen? I had wanted this…planned it all out, even read all the books, but suddenly felt like I had no idea what I was doing.  And I was so overwhelmed with this intense love like I’d never felt before…love mixed with fear that I would screw up the most important job I’d ever had.

Over the next year, I learned so much.  Most importantly, to trust my own instincts and that it was OK not to have all the answers. I learned that I could love my husband even more, seeing what an amazing father he had become. I learned that I could function on very little sleep if I had to, and sometimes those moments in the middle of the night where she looked up at me and smiled were way better than sleeping anyway. And I learned that they really weren’t kidding when they say it all goes by in a blink of an eye.

This is a poem that I printed in Megan’s baby photo book and it still brings tears to my eyes, 11 years later.

“I was pregnant, then I blinked my eyes….

and held you in my arms.

I brought you home then I blinked my eyes…

Your first smile showed me your charms.

I watched you crawl and then I blinked my eyes…

And you were running down the hall.

You’re growing so fast; forgive my cries.

I was pregnant, then I blinked my eyes."

- Dana Robers Clark

So to Kate and Adam: Congrats on surviving your first year as parents.  She’s an amazingly perfect little human.  Happy first birthday, Charlotte!! It's been a honor to capture your moments over this past year, beginning with your birth story.

What did you learn in your first year of parenthood?

Caroline's Senior Portraits & 5 things I wish I could tell my 17 year old self http://www.crystalfreemonphotography.com/blog/2017/9/carolines-senior-portraits-5-things-i-wish-i-could-tell-my-17-year-old-self

Caroline is the niece of one of my oldest & dearest friends from college, Mandy.  I remember her as a toddler, running around at Mandy’s wedding.  Her sister, Jesse, was my very first senior portrait client, and now, two years later, it’s Caroline’s turn.  I haven’t seen her since she was a young girl, but she has one of those personalities that make you instantly feel comfortable around her, and a smile that lights up the room.  It’s no surprise to me that she was elected Homecoming Queen for Cookeville High School this weekend. I’m really glad she made the trip from Cookeville to have a session with me at Henry Horton State Park.

When I posted a preview photo on Facebook after the photo session, I asked people to share what advice they would give to themselves at the age of 17 if they could.  Mandy made a good point with her response.  "Oh, I could tell my 17 year old self all kinds of things, but she wouldn't listen. Like she's pretty, and intelligent, and worthy, and she shouldn't be scared to take chances.”  That’s probably true for me as well, but just in case I would listen, here are a few things I’d tell myself at the age of 17.

1. Plans are good, but plans change.

If you had told me then that in twenty (something) years, that I would be a family portrait photographer, and president of the PTO, I would have told you that you were nuts.  But this is exactly where I am supposed to be.

2. Your friends mold who you become. Make sure they don’t suck, and work to keep the good ones.

Some friends are only in your life for a season, and that is OK.  But for those meant to be your forever friends, make sure you make the time to keep up with them through the years. Traditions and routines help.  Make sure to make a spot on your calendar for the people that matter.

3. Everyone is dealing with their own stuff, even if you don’t know it, so try to be kind.

This one is hard for me. It’s so easy to make snap judgements about people when you don’t know what they are dealing with. Try to give people the benefit of the doubt and be kind.

4. You are beautiful, damn it.

17 is beautiful for sure.  But there is also a different kind of beauty at 37, 57, and 77.  Embrace them all.

5. Be mindful of how awesome your life is, right at this moment.

I feel like there were times in my life that I was so ready for the “next thing”, that I didn’t appreciate how awesome things really were already.  Who knew I would have so many fond memories of eating ramen noodles and getting our furniture off the side of the curb.

So what about you? Did I miss anything? What advice would you give to your 17 year old self?

Playground fun with three siblings http://www.crystalfreemonphotography.com/blog/2017/9/playground-fun-with-three-siblings

For this photo session, Karen wanted the focus to be on the kids, but we did stop to take a few family shots, because those are important too.  I have been photographing these kids since they were itty bitty (and actually shot Camilla's birth), so watching them grow through the eyes of my lens has been so fun.  Kids this age have so much energy, and that's what I just love about them.  For the photo session, I try to keep them moving as much as possible so they don't get bored or frustrated. A playground is a great place to capture kids having fun and exploring their surroundings.

One thing I also LOVE to do with kids in a portrait session is to include their lovie if they have one.  It adds so much emotion to the photos, especially for a mom when you look back on these photos years from now.  My youngest daughter (now 9) was (and really still is though it stays at home now) super attached to her "Mee-Mee", which was a purple baby blanket.  She carried that blanket everywhere when she was little and the photos of her through the years with her blanket are particularly emotional for me.  I am still able to catch a photo with her and her blanket once in a while now, but I know before too long, she will be too old for photos with her lovie.

So I love that Camilla brought her puppy dog to the photo session. I probably need to put something in my family session guide suggesting that lovies come to the session.  What do you think? Does your child have a lovie?

Exploring with Sebastian http://www.crystalfreemonphotography.com/blog/2017/9/exploringwithsebastian

I was so excited when my old friend from college booked me for a family photos session. I had not had the opportunity yet to meet her adorable little boy. I absolutely adore photographing toddlers, and one and half year old Sebastian was no exception. Mona and Jonathan wanted to have the session at their beautiful home, which sits on a gorgeous piece of land in College Grove that was perfect for a family portrait session.

We could not have asked for a more beautiful day.  The weather was perfect for playing and exploring outside.  I've recently been trying to figure out why SOOOO many people are scrambling to book photo sessions in October & November when September is a perfectly lovely option.  Don't get me wrong...I love the fall colors too, but its hard to predict exactly when the color will be at it's peak and it's never a guarantee.  Booking a September session lets you beat the crazy holiday rush that starts in October and gives you plenty of time to order cards and gifts for the holidays.  And you just couldn't ask for more perfect weather.

Sebastian and I became fast friends while hanging out in his favorite place...a trailer in the yard.  It's maybe not your typical play structure, but it was the perfect spot for gathering sticks and acorns, banging on the rails to make music and general exploring.  This is why I love photographing toddlers so much.  They are so fascinated by their surroundings and see everything with such new eyes. I wish that we kept this childhood fascination with the world around us as we grow older. We could learn a lot from little guys like Sebastian.

Ada's Fairy Birthday Party Session http://www.crystalfreemonphotography.com/blog/2017/8/adas-fairy-birthday-party-session I cannot believe this sweet girl is seven years old already.  She is the daughter of one of my dearest friends, who moved to Georgia a little over a year ago.  We were able to come to Georgia to celebrate her 7th birthday at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia.  Although she's not my child, Ada has a bit of Photographer's Kid Syndrome because she's grown up being around me a lot, so sometimes she isn't interested in being in pictures. I am so glad that today she decided to indulge me in a little mini-session while her mom set up for her party at the botanical gardens. Isn't she just beautiful?

I think my favorite part was coming upon a mister that was watering the flowers as we were exploring.  It made for such a magical backdrop for a lovely fairy.  And the color streaks that Ada recently put in her hair looked magical as well.  Though I'm not a prop person, I may need to invest a flower crown or two.

The State Botanical Garden was a wonderful place for a party (and for pictures).  I'm a little jealous that I don't have such a beautiful location close to Spring Hill.

5 Years Ago in a Galaxy Far Far Away.... http://www.crystalfreemonphotography.com/blog/2017/8/5-years-ago-in-a-galaxy-far-far-away 5 Years Ago in a Galaxy Far, Far Away...Jackson was born.

And what an epic Star Wars themed birthday party this was for Jackson.  Jackson's mom, Nicole, is one of the most fabulous party throwers I've ever met.  You may recognize her from my blog post on Jackson's sister Scarlett's Strawberry Shortcake Third Birthday and her Fairy Tea Party Second Birthday.  She wanted to hire me to photograph Jackson's Fourth Birthday Party, but unfortunately I was out of town for that one. But I'm so glad I was able shoot his Star Wars party, because it was completely adorable, and tons of fun for all of Jackson's little guests.

The food was amazing as always, with Boba-Q Pulled Pork being the main dish, served alongside Yodamole, C3-Potato Salad and Princess Lays Chips. There were plenty of options for dessert as well, including C3PO Pops, Wookie Cookies, and Light Sabers (chocolate covered pretzels).  And of course, that GORGEOUS Star Wars Cake.  Drinks for the kids included Yoda Soda and Luke Sky-Water. For grownups who were looking to join the Dark Side, there delicious Cocktails available.

Besides the food, there was plenty of fun activities for the kids, including an awesome obstacle course, and Jedi training performed by Yoda.  Then special guest, Darth Vador showed up to the party.  The children loved putting their new light saber skills to use attacking Darth Vader.  I have to say that a few times I was afraid for my life when shooting in the middle of the action, but it's all in a days work and I survived without injury. The force must have been with me.

The kids loved hitting the Pinata and the grown ups managed to prevent anyone being hit in the head with the bat, so score one for the light side. One of my favorite things about photographing events like this is capturing the candid moments of the children just having fun and enjoying the day...whether that be for the scheduled activities, or just running around chasing each other with light sabers.  Doesn't it just make you smile to see the joy on those faces? I know that Jackson's mom (and lots of other family members) worked so hard to give him this party...I'm sure that joy made it so worth it.

Scarlett Pearl's First Birthday Session http://www.crystalfreemonphotography.com/blog/2017/8/scarlett-pearls-first-birthday-session They say the days are long, but the years are short. That is so true about parenthood and I can't believe I just sent my baby girl off to Middle School.  I swear it was only yesterday that we were celebrating her first birthday.

And it also seems like yesterday that I photographed Scarlett's newborn session and here I am posting her first birthday session already. It turns out that Scarlett and I actually share a birthday, so that is fun.

When Scarlett's mom first contacted me to schedule this session, she was concerned that all the spots on my online scheduling calendar for August were late into the evening. She was afraid that Scarlett would be too tired by 7 p.m. to do well for photos.  I explained to her that my calendar is based upon the best lighting for portrait sessions, and are typically scheduled an hour before sunset.  In the summer time, this can be pretty late, especially for little ones.  While it's important to plan for pretty light, it is also very important to make sure baby is happy and well rested. So we scheduled this session for 4:30 and made sure that we selected a location that had plenty of shade so that harsh lighting wasn't an issue.  So if you are trying to schedule a session, and a need a time that is different from what is listed on my calendar, please feel free email me and discuss your needs.

This session was a bit hotter than the mild weather I had for my session the night before, but we made it work and Scarlett and her parents were good sports about the heat. Scarlett is a beautiful, serious little girl and I just adore the way her eyes thoughtfully explore the world around her.  She love flying in Daddy's arms, and was particularly interested in the leaves and sticks she found on the trail. Happy Birthday Scarlett! I hope you had an amazing day.

Beautiful Summer Evening with Adorable Twin Girls http://www.crystalfreemonphotography.com/blog/2017/8/beautiful-summer-evening-with-adorable-twin-girls Whenever someone books a session in August, I worry about the heat.  People often ask me if there is a particular season that is best as far as backgrounds.  I know lots of people prefer Fall portraits, and I love them too, but I truly believe every season is gorgeous in its own way.  The only thing I worry about is the weather.  It doesn't matter to me so much, but I want my clients to be comfortable at their sessions, and let's face it...sometimes that is really hard when it's August in Tennessee and it's 100 degrees outside.

Well, this session proved that you just really never know about that Tennessee weather.  The temperature was absolutely perfect, as were these adorable twin sisters. Molly and Abby were so easy to work with and we had so much fun on this gorgeous summer evening.

I arrived early for the session to scope out the setting, and fell in love with all the yellow wildflowers growing near the trees. One of my favorite things about this location for outdoor portraits is how different it looks each time I go.  It made a perfect location for these carefree little girls to roam and explore.

Family Fun on the Farm http://www.crystalfreemonphotography.com/blog/2017/7/family-fun-on-the-farm Is there anything more fun than a summer evening with cousins playing on the farm?  When Katie booked this family portrait session, she said that her brother and his family were moving to Montana, and would be staying with them for a few days on their way.  She wanted to book the session during his stay so that we could capture these sweet cousins enjoying their time together.

One thing that was different for this session, is that for the very first time, I had my own intern.  A friend had written me and said that her 16 year old daughter, Maya, was really interested in photography and wondered if I would mind her shadowing me for a session. With a big family session like this one, there is hardly any time to discuss what I'm doing and instruct, but hopefully she was able to get a sense of how my sessions flow and how I interact with clients. And we had a little time for questions afterwards.

With small children, I told her that I always start with the more posed family & group shots.  That's because with little kids, you lose their attention pretty fast with too many standing still and smiling instructions.  But after we get those out of the way, I am able to move on to the shots that I prefer - candids of the children playing and interacting with each other....and in this case the horses!  These are the photos that I feel are able to really give a sense of their personalities and who they are at this beautiful time in their lives. Their expressions and demeanors can change in a second, and you never know what kind of beautiful moment might happen.

For me, it's about finding a balance between the art of observation, and also gently nudging the scene into the direction I want to go.  For example, I was shooting something else when I happened to observe the adorable scene with William climbing on the fence to the horses while Thatcher was riding on the tractor. I stopped what I was doing for a second, and snapped a photo of what was unfolding naturally with the kids.  Alternately, I do little things throughout the session such as asking Ashlyn to go give Grandpa a hug.  This way, I'm able to fit more real authentic (nudged) moments into a session that would happen naturally if I wasn't guiding them a little.

I hope that these photos provide a beautiful memory for this family of summer evenings, cousins, love and being photobombed by the cat.

Lucky Ladd Farms Summer Camp http://www.crystalfreemonphotography.com/blog/2017/6/lucky-ladd-farms-summer-camp I'm pretty sure my daughter was more excited about "Goat Camp" than she was about going to Disney World.  If you don't believe me, take a look for yourself at this video.  She had not stopped asking for weeks "how many days until goat camp?"

A little excited about Lucky Ladd Farms Summer Camp The camp 100% lived up to her expectations.  She had a blast every single day.  She came home so excited every day telling me about all the amazing things she did, from taking care of her goat, picking vegetables, crafts and even making butter. She loved her teacher, Ms. Amanda, Mr. Frankie and the teenage helpers that helped out at the camp.  Of course her favorite part of camp was her goat, who she named Bee Bee.  Each child at camp gets to choose a baby goat to be their goat for the week. They get to name the goat, feed it, and even made a lead themselves out of twine (Kayla said they made rope out of wine.  LOL). Then they worked each day on leading the goats around the farm.

Let me tell you, you have not lived until you've seen a group of 5-9 year olds trying to lead baby goats around a farm.  I am so glad that the Ladds asked me to photograph the camp for their promotional materials, because children plus baby goats equals photography gold.

After our adventures with the goats and other animals, I followed the campers back to the covered picnic area for craft time.  They each worked on a handmade journal of their experiences at camp where the wrote down a few lines about their favorite parts each day.  After that, the kids were to experiment making giant bubbles, which was also super fun to photograph.

I spent the morning hanging out with the kids at camp, and then left for a while, but came back in the afternoon for the end of week show and tell and family cookout.  The kids put on an adorable show with songs, jokes, and each camper went on stage and told a little about his or her goat.  The Farmer Ladd fed us all a delicious dinner of zuchinni (picked at the farm by the campers!), hot dogs and s'mores.  It was a perfect end to a perfect week at camp.

The sad part for Kayla was telling Bee Bee goodbye. I just adore the photo below of my oldest daughter hugging and comforting Kayla after she had told Bee Bee goodbye.  Kayla is looking at Bee Bee's name tag for the week that she was able to take home as a momento at camp.  The good thing is that she can go visit Bee Bee at Lucky Ladd Farms any time she wants.  She was already asking to visit him on Saturday.

Micaela's Senior Portrait Session http://www.crystalfreemonphotography.com/blog/2017/6/micaelas-senior-portrait-session Micaela just graduated from Spring Hill High School.  She was supposed to have her senior photos taken earlier by a family friend who is a photographer, but unfortunately that photographer suffered from a shoulder injury and was unable to do the session.  So her mom, Julie, searched on Google for photographers in Spring Hill and found me.  She said she was looking for someone whose style was more candid and less posed, so she enjoyed my style.

When I first started shooting seniors, I was a little hesitant because of the fact that I do prefer more natural looking photos.  My concern was how to do that when photographing one person.  For family sessions, I often put families into place and then sit back and capture them as they interact with each other.  That's definitely harder to do when there is only one person in the photo.  I've learned that the key is to try to get them to interact with ME.  Rather than telling them exactly where to stand, how to hold their hand/chin, etc, I just prefer to put them in the right light and then carry on a conversation with them.  This way, hopefully I can capture a look or a motion that is all them.  I just adore Micaela's s serious, thoughtful looks below but I also love her slight smile she gave as we were chatting about her brothers, or their family's vacation to Italy.

I also like to understand what kind of interests the seniors have before a session.  Micaela will be starting auto-diesel  college soon and wanted to include her car in some photographs.  I thought that was a fun opportunity to play with the lights from the car headlights, and threw in some sparklers just for fun.

Love, Happiness, Grand-babies & Family http://www.crystalfreemonphotography.com/blog/2017/6/love-happiness-grand-babies-family When you book a session with me, I ask that you fill out a little survey with a few questions that will help me plan for your session and to know what your priorities are for the photo shoot.  When asked what she wanted to remember about right now, Sherri answered "love, happiness, grand-babies & family."  I hope I've captured that for her. She also indicated that she preferred candid photos, which you know makes my heart sing as that is my favorite as well.  Of course, with such a large group, some photos have to be posed to a certain extent just to get everyone in the frame, so we started the session with some more posed options.  But then my favorite part of the session was when we went to the playground.  The family just played and hung out as normal, and I was able to roam around getting shots of whatever was happening at the time. One reason this is one of my favorite spots to photograph families is the way that the sun sets behind the playground.  It makes for a gorgeous backdrop as the kids play and have a good time.

Hadley's Newborn Session with Adorable Big Brother Harper http://www.crystalfreemonphotography.com/blog/2017/6/hadleys-newborn-session-with-adorable-big-brother-harper When I entered this beautiful home yesterday, I was greeted by adorable three year old Harper, who is FULL of energy.  Whenever I enter the home of a family of four or more for a newborn portrait , my first attention goes, not to the baby, but to the older child.  It's a tough transition to suddenly not be an only child anymore, and I find it's best if I put big brother or sister in the spotlight at first, sometimes asking them to show me around or to "introduce" me to their new baby. Harper was happy to show me around, and he did a fantastic job introducing me to sweet Hadley.

Like pretty much every three year old I've ever met, Harper wasn't interested in sitting and posing for photos.  But I don't really care for super posed photos anyway, so that's totally fine with me.  This is exactly why I love toddlers and preschoolers so much...they are 100% authentic, every single second. And authenticity is one thing I aim to capture.

I'm not there to photograph a JC Penny style family photo of a perfectly posed family.  For a newborn session, my aim is to capture some of that magic that you feel when you walk into the home of a family with a newborn and a toddler.  This is a stage in life that is both terribly hard and wonderfully amazing all at the same time, and goes by so quickly. I want to capture real life details from this amazing time.  Baby Hadley loves for her daddy to rock her in the nursery when she needs consoling.  Harper is full of energy, loves books and adores his baby sister.  This is what lifestyle photography is all about.

I get excited when I meet parents like this who embrace lifestyle photography.  They weren't focused on getting a specific posed shot of their newborn, but wanted to capture the magic of life as it currently exists.  I loved that dad was quick to grab Harper for a tickle fight and that mom stopped for a few minutes to play trains with him.  When Harper needed a break, I suggested that he hang out with dad for a few minutes while I photographed baby sister. Dad read some books to Harper and I was able to sneak a few shots of them together that are some of my favorites.  I hope that these photos are something this family will look back on years from now and be able to see the love that lived here.
