Bumpus Family Session - Chaser of Light | Middle Tennessee Family PhotographerI always get a little nervous when clients ask me to shoot somewhere that I've never been before. Often, non-photographers don't really have a good idea of what makes a great portrait location. Because of this, I will only shoot somewhere new at magic hour, because that way I know I should be able to find beautiful light most anywhere. But sometimes, all the stars align and the location, the lighting, the people, and in this case, the animals, all work together to create a magical session. One way that becoming a photographer truly changed me, was in developing an appreciation / love (OK, maybe obsession) for beautiful light. I'm not sure I ever really noticed the light very often before I became a photographer, and that is truly sad. I believe my seven year old daughter Kayla has this gift naturally. Oftentimes we will be driving, and she will say "Mommy! Look how beautiful the light is!!" And I don't just mean sunsets and sunrises. Have you ever noticed the way the light looks after a storm? Or the way light can come through the trees in just the right way? I sometimes wonder if my choices seem insane to people who don't see the light the way I do. Do they wonder why I make them step to the right a few steps, even though the trees behind them look exactly the same as where they were before? Well it's because I'm not looking at the trees. Well, actually I am because the trees are important too, but I make you move because I am chasing the light. Always...chasing the light. Well at this session, I found the light. So. much. beautiful. light. <3
