Baby Scarlett Pearl's at Home Newborn Portrait Session - Spring Hill TNWhen I arrived for my session, there was a sign on the front door that said "Please do not ring the doorbell." I wouldn't have anyway of course, since I'm a professional photographer showing up for a newborn portrait session, and also because I'm a mom. But the sign instantly brought me back to that life...those early days of being a parent. I remember the sleepless nights, the feeling of not knowing what I was doing, and the overwhelming emotion that I was not at all prepared for despite having prepared for these moments for nine long months. I also remember the absolute awe at this beautiful little human that we had created...the feeling when she looked up at me with those big eyes and I knew that life would never be the same.
I was greeted at the door by two sweet doggies who have probably had their whole worlds turned upside down over the past two weeks. The book "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" by Mark Weissbluth sat on the table. I could not even tell you how many times I've read that book. It's one of the best books ever written. Seriously. A soothie pacifier sat appropriately next to the book.
Sweet Scarlett was absolutely beautiful, with a head full of dark hair, and being held protectively in her mother's arms. Mom and Dad were both obviously beaming with pride over their new sweet baby girl. Scarlett was born on my birthday (August 8) so we have a connection I think. She was 7.1lb, 20in long and born at Williamson Medical Center. Her parents chose to let her gender be a surprise, so her new little purple blanket and onesie were some of the first non gender neutral items that they had purchased for her.
My first goal was to capture some family shots in the living room area. There were a couple windows in the room that let in just enough light, once I opened the blinds. I asked the new family to sit on the couch, and the dogs were happy to join them for the family photo. In fact, they did not seem to want to leave the side of their new human, as they protectively watched over her. I explained that I wanted to capture real moments from the family and not a lot of posed images, and instructed them to interact with baby Scarlett and each other and that I would be taking various photos from different angles. They did an amazing job and were so enamored by their sweet baby girl, that at times I think they forgot that I was there...which is perfect.
After that, we went upstairs to Scarlett's nursery to capture her with her own things. Her dad had made some of the beautiful shelves that hung on the wall of her nursery. There were some beautiful blankets that were handmade by a relative that we chose to include in some of the photos.
At some point, Scarlett needed to take a break to nurse, so she and mom spent some time together in the nursery while I checked some email and reviewed some of the photos I had taken already. I never ever want a new mom to feel like our session is rushed. The session operates on the baby's time and we will take as many breaks as necessary, which is why I schedule extra time for these sessions. Once she was ready again, we focused on some individual photos of Scarlett. We found a nice big window in the family room with pretty light. We used some of the special blankets that she had a a backdrop to lay her own. I brought a few headbands that had been made for me by my friend at Tutu Dawn Designs. Scarlett was a natural and gave us some amazing expressions that you would have not expected such a young baby to give. Have you ever seen such cuteness?
The last place we photographed was in mom and dad's bedroom. This is often the place where newborns and their families spend a great amount of time, so I always offer to capture that environment if it's something the family wants. I love how the dogs piled into the bed with the family. I also love the mirror in the bedroom and the way it reflected the family in the photographs if I managed to stand in just the right place.
It was such a joy to meet my birthday twin and her family. I hope that these photos will help them to remember those beautiful, magical first days as parents to their baby girl.
